Old Dominion Tours was founded by public historian and writer Andrew Nason, with the goal of creating unique fun and educational experiences.
What makes us unique
Old Dominion Walking Tours is a historian-guided tour company. That means that all of our tours are created and hosted by professional historians – people with an educational and professional background in studying and sharing history in academic and public settings.
This is what sets us apart. Most historic tours of American cities are hosted by passionate amateur history-buffs. These people love history and are often great at sharing facts, figures, and trivia about their city, and are great for showing people around the city. However, Old Dominion Walking Tours has a different mission. Utilizing the experience and talent of professional historian writers and guides, we want to ensure that our narratives showcase the greater significance of each of our sites in Virginian and American history. We want to share stories beyond how many bricks are in a building, but rather what the building can tell us about what it means to be Virginian.
Old Dominion Walking Tours was built to be something unique – a new way through which visitors and locals alike can interact with history. Far more exciting than an academic tome, and more rigorously researched than a pop history tour.
